“On Old Age”*

A DATE IN EARLY 2018

*"Cato Maior de Senectute" ("Cato the Elder on Old Age") by Marcus Tullius Cicero, published in 44 B.C., is an essay about aging written in the form of a dialogue.

Grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer's the day before today. Although it was known by all, it so happens that there was no awareness that it was information actually known beforehand. We maintained an unspoken agreement of naive silence: no one wished that the suspected information was in fact—as facts usually are—, our present reality.

Yesterday it was known again by all (or rather for the first time), and today the earth is dry, it has not been able to absorb my mother's tears.
